About Wuxi

Jichang Garden uses water and rockwork at the foot of Huishan, while Nanchang Street follows a working-waterway history through bridges and residential lanes. Wuxi Museum adds archaeological and craft material, including Huishan clay figurines and Yixing zisha. These make a practical city-focused introduction before a separate lakeshore outing. The different areas require planned connections rather than a single continuous heritage walk.

Jichang Garden was renovated for Qin Dezao by the designer Zhang Lian (张涟) and his nephew Zhang Shi (张轼) toward the end of the Shunzhi era and the start of the Kangxi era, and became a regular stop for the Kangxi and Qianlong emperors' tours of South China. In the early Yongzheng era it was confiscated after Qin Daoran was imprisoned, then returned and later renovated again with a donation from Qin Ruixi.

Nanchang Street (南长街), in Wuxi's Liangxi district, follows the ancient Beijing-Hangzhou canal for a distance of just over five kilometres. It began as a Northern Song dynasty post road linking Suzhou to the south and Changzhou to the north, running parallel to the canal's water route, and was one of old Wuxi's busiest commercial areas; after 1949 its separately named segments were unified under the name Nanchang Street.

Along the street stand Nanchan Ancient Temple (南禅古寺), first built in the reign of Emperor Wu of Liang, and the Qingming Bridge Historic and Cultural Street (清名桥历史文化街区), one of China's Historic and Cultural Streets (中国历史文化名街). The area preserves 19 national, provincial and municipal protected cultural heritage sites, 8 memorial archways and 17 other cultural relics; its landmark is the Ming-dynasty Qingning Bridge (清宁桥), renamed Qingming Bridge (清名桥) to avoid the Daoguang Emperor's name.

What to look for

  • Jichang Garden sets a designed water-and-rock landscape against the Huishan setting.
  • Nanchang Street and Qingming Bridge reveal the close relationship between road and canal.

The surrounding area

Use the city for Taihu outings and a distinct local food stop within a southern Jiangsu route.
