About Xuzhou Museum

Jade, figurines and burial objects provide a particularly strong focus, including the collection’s gold-thread jade burial suit.

The museum grounds also contain a former Qianlong travelling palace and a Han quarry site. Begin with the galleries, then add whichever historic areas are currently accessible. Do not assume access to the separate Tushan tomb, which the source identifies as closed to visitors.

The museum was founded in 1959 and, after three later rounds of rebuilding and expansion, now occupies a site of 40,000 square metres, with a building area of about 20,000 square metres and 6,500 square metres of exhibition space. In April 2014 it was rated a national AAAA tourist attraction (国家AAAA级旅游景区).

The museum's collections comprise 15,577 objects displayed across seven galleries and are described as representing 6,000 years of civilisation. Among them is a group of terracotta warriors and horses from the tomb of Liu Wu, the third king of Chu in the Western Han dynasty, found in 1984 in six pits: three of infantry, one of pottery guards, one of cavalry and one of chariots. Only two infantry pits and the pottery-guard pit have been fully excavated, yielding 2,393 figures about a foot tall, arranged in a Chu Kingdom battle formation with crossbows and armour.

The gold-thread jade burial suit (金缕玉衣) excavated from the tomb of a Western Han King of Chu (西汉楚王陵) is among the museum's most valuable holdings; during the 2008 Beijing Olympics it was sent to the Capital Museum in Beijing, where it was exhibited together with the terracotta warriors sent from Xi'an.
