About Yaowan Ancient Town
An S-shaped old street links the town's waterfront and commercial heritage. Merchants from several regions established guildhalls here, leaving a mixture of architectural traditions. The Shanxi Guildhall, restored and reconstructed on its original site in 2011, includes a theatre stage and Guandi Temple.
The reconstructed Wu Family Courtyard presents four successive courtyards in a brick-and-timber design influenced by coastal Fujian. Nearby, the Zhao Xinlong Sauce Workshop connects the town's trading history with its food culture: rows of fermentation jars are associated with tianyou, a local sauce used with the fish and other ingredients of canal-boat cooking.
