About China Donghai Crystal Museum

Opened in 2013, the museum brings together natural specimens and carved crystal works from Donghai and elsewhere. Its crystal galleries occupy the first three floors of the building on Zhonghua Road; the county history displays are on the fourth floor.

The large Crystal King specimen in the central hall was unearthed in Donghai’s Caolin village in 1995. Displays on crystal formation and a simulated underground mine give the mineral a geological setting, while finished artworks show how craftspeople respond to the material. The comparison between unworked crystals and polished, carved pieces is central to understanding Donghai’s local specialty.
