About Anyuan Coal Miners Memorial

The exhibition building rises above Shengli Square on Niuxingling, with documents, photographs and objects explaining workplace conditions and the 1922 strike. Large sculptural compositions, including Miners’ Suffering and The Great Strike, give the labour narrative a physical form. The visit is centred on the miners’ movement rather than a general military memorial.

The museum's predecessor was a display room at the site of the Anyuan Railway and Mine Workers' Club, established in 1955 and formally opened on 1 January 1956; it was renamed the Anyuan Railway and Mine Workers' Movement Memorial Museum in December 1963. Construction of a two-story reinforced-concrete exhibition building on Niuxingling began in July 1968, when the museum was renamed the Chairman Mao's Revolutionary Activities in Anyuan Memorial Museum; it opened in April 1969 with a floor area of 3,245 square meters. The museum reverted to its 1963 name in September 1972, and Deng Xiaoping (邓小平) wrote its inscribed name in August 1984.

It was designated a Jiangxi provincial scenic area in December 1985, rated Pingxiang's first national 4A tourist attraction in 2010, and named a National First-Grade Museum (国家一级博物馆) by the Chinese Museums Association in 2017. Its collection includes more than 5,100 cultural relics, over 500 documents and memoirs, and more than 600 photographic, audio and video items.
