About Dawei Mountain
Tonggu sits at the head of the Xiu River with its land falling away from south-west to north-east, and twenty of its peaks pass 1,000 metres. Dawei Shan holds the western end of that ridge line. The county's climate is humid northern subtropical, with an annual mean of 16.4 degrees Celsius, a July mean of 27.3 degrees and about 1,771 millimetres of rain spread over some 155 rain days, which is the basis for the area's reputation as a summer refuge.
The woodland is the county's defining feature rather than a detail of one hillside. Forest covers 88.04 per cent of Tonggu, a figure the county government reports as second among China's three thousand-odd counties and first in Jiangxi, and the air is measured at up to 70,000 negative oxygen ions per cubic centimetre. Roughly a million wild southern Chinese yews grow in the county, which is styled the home of that species in China. Tonggu is also the only Hakka county in western Jiangxi, with about four in five residents Hakka, so the settlements below the mountain are Hakka ones.
