About Jiangling Scenic Area

The Jiangling landscape covers about 38 square kilometres. Its terraces are cut into hills approaching a thousand metres and run continuously from the valley floor up past the 400-metre line, so the same slope can be at different stages at the same time. Old trees, the stream, the terraces, the farmhouses and the crops sit together in one view, and in spring the yellow of the flowering fields stands against the whitewashed, dark-tiled Huizhou houses.

The flowering is farmed, not incidental. Wuyuan pays subsidies to households that plant rapeseed and supplies quality seed free of charge, a policy sustained for more than twenty years; the county's rapeseed area now holds at around 120,000 mu, with more than 20,000 mu of that inside the core areas of Jiangling, Huangling and Sixi Yancun. Flowering and its timing vary with the season and nothing about a particular display can be promised.

What to look for

• The terraces themselves, climbing from the valley floor to above 400 metres on hills approaching 1,000 metres
• The arrangement of old trees, watercourse, terraces, farmhouses and crops within a single slope
• The whitewashed, dark-tiled Huizhou farmhouses set among the fields
• The scale of the planting, part of a county rapeseed area of about 120,000 mu of which over 20,000 mu lie in the core scenic areas
