About Nanchang Han Dynasty Haihun Marquis State Site Museum
The archaeological site the museum serves is a national key cultural heritage protection unit, listed by the State Council in its seventh batch, and lies on the western shore of Poyang Lake. It combines the walled capital of Zijincheng, which covers about 3.6 square kilometres and retains some 7,516 metres of wall line, with Liu He's tomb park on Guodun hill and further tomb groups to the west and south. Excavation began after villagers reported in March 2011 that a tomb on a hill near Guanxi village in Datangping township had been robbed, and rescue digging was authorised the following month. Since then the site has yielded more than ten thousand objects, among them gold, bronze, iron and jade work, lacquered wood and inscribed bamboo and wooden slips, and the tomb is the only one found south of the Yangtze with a pit holding real chariots and horses.
Liu He was a grandson of Emperor Wu of Han and a son of Liu Bo, Prince Ai of Changyi; he held in turn the ranks of prince, emperor, deposed prince and marquis, and the marquisate he founded passed through four generations and lasted 168 years, to the close of the Eastern Han. Construction of the park began in May 2018 and it opened in September 2020, gaining accreditation as a national archaeological site park in 2022; the park covers about 12.03 square kilometres and takes in a visitor centre, the museum, the Guodunyuan shelter and Guanxiyuan. The museum is a national first-grade museum with about 39,330 square metres of floor area, roughly 12,343 of them given to display.
