About Nanchang

The rebuilt pavilion gives an elevated view of the water, while Jiangxi Provincial Museum introduces the province through distinctive bronzes and ceramics. The contrast between the old east-bank city and the museum’s contemporary home makes a useful first visit without trying to cover the whole provincial capital.

Nanchang has a recorded urban history of more than 2,200 years, and its historic sites include the tomb of the Marquis of Haihun (海昏侯墓), the Shengjin Pagoda (绳金塔) and the Bada Shanren Memorial Hall (八大山人纪念馆). During the Southern Tang period, the city was known as Nandu (南都). After the founding of the People's Republic, Nanchang produced the new China's first aircraft, its first coastal-defence missiles, and its first motorcycles and tractors, becoming an important manufacturing centre and the birthplace of China's aviation industry.

The city lies within the Poyang Lake plain, formed where the Gan, Fu, Xin, Poyang and Xiu rivers converge into Poyang Lake; Nanchang sits in the middle of this plain, beside the Gan River, with hills to its west and water to its east. An isolated range in the northwest, Mei Ridge (梅岭), runs southwest to northeast, and its main peak, Xiyao Peak (洗药峰), at 841.1 metres, is the city's highest point.

Nanchang is designated a National Historical and Cultural City (国家历史文化名城) and was among China's first group of low-carbon pilot cities (低碳试点城市). Numerous lakes lie within the urban area, including East Lake, West Lake, South Lake and North Lake, giving rise to the description 'lake in the city, city in the lake'.

Background & history

Nanchang is the capital of Jiangxi, China. Located in the north-central part of the province and in the hinterland of Poyang Lake Plain, it is bounded on the west by the Jiuling Mountains, and on the east by Poyang Lake. Because of its strategic location connecting the prosperous East and South China, it has become a major railway hub in Southern China in recent decades. As the Nanchang Uprising in 1927 is distinctively recognized by the ruling Communist Party as "firing the first gunshot against the Nationalists", the current government has therefore named the city since 1949 "the place where the People's Liberation Army was born", and the most widely known "place where the military banner of the People's Liberation Army was first raised". Nanchang is also a major city, appearing among the top 100 cities in the world by scientific research outputs, as tracked by the Nature Index and home to Nanchang University.
