About Shicheng Village

The Lingyandong scenic area occupies the north-western corner of Dazhangshan Township in the north of the county and covers thirty square kilometres. The county lists its subject matter as the cave group, old and notable trees, stone-forest formations and the autumn colour at Shicheng, together with valuable Tang and Song ink inscriptions. The area was made a national forest park in May 1993, a provincial scenic area in July 1995 and a national 4A tourist area in April 2008.

The village itself is small and low in the valley. The county's culture and tourism bureau describes December there as the most colourful time, when frost has turned the hillside maples red and cooking smoke rises behind whitewashed, dark-tiled horse-head gables while morning mist still fills the hollow. Tall red maples stand at the edge of the settlement. All of this is seasonal and weather-dependent, and no particular effect can be counted on.

What to look for

• The stand of tall old maples beside the village, which turn red after frost
• The slope between Chengcun and Daicun, which the county names as the vantage point over the village
• Morning mist lying in the valley until the sun reaches it
• Cooking smoke rising behind the whitewashed walls and horse-head gables of the houses
• The wider Lingyandong area the village belongs to, with its caves, old trees and stone-forest formations
