About Taoyuan Rice Terraces

The scenic area covers about 10 square kilometres on ground reported at an elevation of 1,442 metres, and contains more than 5,000 mu of terraced fields, of which over 2,000 mu form a single continuous sweep. The terraces became widely known through photography in the 2010s, and the area was rated a national AAAA tourist area in 2021, after which a programme of upgrading work at the foot of Jiaoziding began in June 2022. Local development has been organised around two themes, the farming culture of the terraces themselves and the Hakka culture of the settlements among them.

The individual viewpoints carry their own names. Wangtianqiu is the best-known: in spring, when the fields are flooded for planting, the water turns the curved bowl of terraces into a reflecting surface, which is why it is also called the 'Guanyin jade basin' and viewed from the point known as the Mirror of the Sky. Other named features listed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs include Panlonghui, Taoyuan Xiangu, the Sky Camp, Taoyuan Flower Street and the Gengdu Leyuan farming-and-study grounds. Guesthouse courtyards in the area are used to show local crafts, among them Hakka folding-fan making, hand bamboo weaving and the painting of oil-paper umbrellas.
