About Imperial Kiln Museum and Imperial Kiln Factory Site
Both belong to the Taoyangli Imperial Kiln area, which the municipal government puts at 3.2 square kilometres with a core of more than 1.6 square kilometres. Besides the factory site and the museum, the area takes in the lane housing around them, guild halls and porcelain shops, quarters where kiln work was carried on, and later ceramic industrial buildings. The Imperial Kiln Factory site itself is a national key cultural heritage protection unit: this was where porcelain was made exclusively for the court under the Ming and Qing, and the shards buried in its ground come from the same production as pieces now in the Palace Museum.
The surrounding fabric is part of the point. Song and Yuan roadways, Ming and Qing buildings, lanes walled with kiln brick, guild halls and academies and industrial remains are preserved together, and the city presents the ensemble as covering some two thousand years of ceramic making, a thousand years of official kiln production and six hundred years of imperial kiln history. The area has been entered on China's tentative list for World Cultural Heritage. The phrase once used of this quarter, thirteen li of Taoyang and a hundred thousand households of kiln smoke, refers to the same ground.
