About Mount Fortress and Macao Museum
Mount Fortress rises beside the central historic district, with Macao Museum integrated into the same hilltop setting. The combination links a former defensive position with a broader account of the city’s communities and daily life. The fortress grounds and the museum galleries offer complementary views of Macao’s history.
Built with the Jesuits between 1617 and 1626, the fortress was a major military structure with cannon positions, storage and provisions. Its projecting corners and enclosed plan reveal its defensive purpose. The museum shifts attention from the fortifications to the cultural and social history of the people who lived in the city.
Read the walls and viewpoints before entering the galleries, so the museum’s location remains meaningful. From the ramparts, compare the old urban fabric with the later skyline. Inside, follow a few themes through objects and interpretation rather than trying to read every label. Museum admission and opening arrangements are separate from access to the outdoor fortress grounds.
