About Moorish Barracks

Pale yellow walls, white detailing and pointed arches give the building a different character from nearby Chinese temples and houses. The long verandas respond to the climate while framing views along the hillside. Built for troops from Goa, it now serves the Marine and Water Bureau. Plan a visit around the exterior and publicly accessible veranda; the presence of government offices does not mean the whole building is a museum.

What to look for

  • Pointed arches form a repeated rhythm along the wide verandas.
  • The heavy granite platform contrasts with the pale yellow plaster and white ornament above.

Location & getting there

Getting to Moorish Barracks

Approach along Calçada da Barra on Barra Hill. Use the public veranda access indicated at the former barracks and respect the boundary of the working government offices.

General visit reminders

Choose the building, exhibition or part of the historic area you most want to see, then leave time to explore its setting. Check the venue’s current opening and reservation arrangements directly; a place appearing on the map does not mean every building or gallery is accessible on your travel date.
