About St Joseph's Seminary and Church
The contrast between the formal approach and the church facade is the clearest basis for a visit. The seminary was important in regional missionary education, but it is not open to the public. Concentrate on the church and authorised exterior spaces, with nearby St Augustine’s Square providing a natural continuation.
The seminary was founded by Jesuits in 1728 as a branch of St Paul's College (圣保禄学院) to train missionaries for inland China. Until 1758 it stood on a hilltop site south of St Paul's College; its church was built between 1746 and 1758. From 1759 Portugal moved against the Jesuits, and by 1762 they were expelled from Macau, closing the seminary. It reopened in 1784 under the Lazarists, refounded by Alexandre de Gouveia (汤士选), bishop of the Beijing diocese.
The seminary building, completed in 1758, connects to the church by an internal passage and is not open to the public. Its walls are mainly yellow, with green at the main entrance, and it has little ornament. The older main block rose from two to three storeys on arched supports with a Chinese-style tile roof, while a two-storey annex of reinforced concrete with a flat roof was rebuilt in 1953.
The seminary and church received a UNESCO Asia-Pacific heritage award in 2001, and in 2005 became part of the Historic Centre of Macau on the World Heritage List. In 2010 archives of the Catholic Diocese of Macao and old books held at the seminary, catalogued as the Archival Documents of the Catholic Diocese of Macau, 16th–19th century (天主教澳门教区档案文献(十六至十九世纪)), were inscribed on UNESCO's Asia-Pacific Memory of the World Register.
