About Amne Machin Snow Mountain Roadside Viewpoint
The mountain stands in 玛沁县, Golog Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai; Xinhua’s Qinghai channel places it in the county’s north-west. The 大美青海 page, an article credited to 西宁晚报, explains the name: 阿尼 is an Amdo Tibetan transcription meaning an ancestral old man, and also carries senses of beauty, happiness or fearlessness among others, while 玛卿 means the highest and greatest mountain at the source of the Yellow River. It records the alternative names 玛积雪山 and 玛卿岗日, says the massif is made of sandstone, limestone and granite with an average elevation above 5,900 m, and describes the main peak 玛卿岗日 as three summits above 6,000 m whose highest point is 6,282 m. Xinhua’s December 2023 report gives the same main-peak height and describes the mountain as covered in snow all year.
The page gives the massif 13 peaks and 57 glaciers covering about 126 km², and names 哈龙冰川 as the longest and largest glacier in the Yellow River basin; Xinhua gives the glaciers as covering more than 100 km² and describes the longest of them as the Yellow River basin’s longest valley glacier, with its ice tongue winding down between the mountains. The page adds that the area is a breeding habitat for snow leopards that has long drawn international zoological attention, that its alpine meadow and forest belt hold snowcock, eared pheasant, snow leopard and white-lipped deer among other birds and animals, and that plants including caterpillar fungus, 当归, rhubarb, fritillary, mushrooms and 蕨麻 grow there among several dozen kinds of valued medicinal plants.
The page records the tradition that the mountain is the soul-mountain of the Tibetan hero Gesar, that one circuit of it is held to erase the sins of past and present lives with merit equal to reciting the six-syllable mantra 1.3 billion times, and that in the mountain’s own year — a Tibetan horse year — believers come from home and abroad to walk around it in prayer. It also records a six-day trekking event that began on 24 June 2014, which it says the national mountaineering management centre, the Qinghai sports bureau and the Golog prefectural government jointly hosted and the provincial mountaineering centre with the 玛沁县委 and county government undertook: 50 trekking enthusiasts recruited nationwide joined pilgrims for six days, three of them walking the circumambulation, covering 76 km. Neither page describes a designated highway viewing area, a boundary or an entrance, so the catalogue’s own name is not confirmed by the cited sources.
The page also states that 玛沁县 takes its name from the mountain, lies in the core area of the Sanjiangyuan ecological protection area, has more than 54,000 people and is a predominantly Tibetan pastoral county.
