Cuihua Mountain 翠华山

Cuihua Shan

Cuihuashan (翠华山) is a mountain in Chang'an District, Xi'an, Shaanxi, about 20 km from the city's built-up area, whose landscape is made by the wreckage of an ancient landslide. It is designated Cuihuashan National Geopark and forms one of the eight scenic areas of the Qinling Zhongnanshan Global Geopark.

About Cuihua Mountain

The geopark administration's note says the main body of the landslide landform took shape at the end of the Western Zhou period, that its types are complete and its structure typical, and that the barrier lake, the barrier dam, the collapsed rock sea and the free rock faces all survive intact. It lists the rock and cave features this produced, among them Taiyi Guanxing, Fengdong (the wind cave), Bingdong (the ice cave), Yixiantian, Shiqiang, Tianqianhai, Wotuo, Wohu Shoutai, Shuangyu Naohai, Jinchan Tuoke and Yinchan Fuzi, and notes that high-mountain meadow and periglacial landforms supplement the rugged landslide relics. The same note claims the landslide relics are the largest in scale in China and third in the world, and that the volume of the single largest fallen block ranks first in the world; Shaanxi Daily quotes the same three claims from He Jia, assistant to the general manager of the Cuihuashan scenic area, who also calls the scenic area the core area of the geopark.

Shaanxi Daily reports that the geopark's eight scenic areas are strung along the ring tourism belt on the northern slope of the Qinling: Cuihuashan, Nanwutai, Heihe, Taiping, Zhuque, Wangshun Mountain, the Lantian Man site and Huaqing Palace. The paper dates the geopark's rating as a world-class geopark to August 2009, after UNESCO experts recognised its geological landscapes and ecological resources. It also places the Qinling Zhongnanshan Global Geopark Museum in Cuihuashan's Yifangyuan scenic area and describes it as the first geological museum in northwest China, showing films that include 秦岭造山运动 and 翠华山山崩 and displaying mineral specimens of more than a hundred kinds from around the world.

  • The Qinling Zhongnanshan Global Geopark Museum in the Yifangyuan scenic area, with its mineral specimens of more than a hundred kinds and its films on the Qinling orogeny and the Cuihuashan landslide
  • The high-mountain meadow and periglacial landforms the geopark note says supplement the landslide relics
