About Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea Scenic Area
Penglai, at the northern tip of the Jiaodong peninsula, is the traditional setting of that legend and of the three immortal mountains Penglai, Fangzhang and Yingzhou; the Shandong provincial government describes the area as long known as a realm of immortals and links the story to this coast. The park forms one half of a national 4A scenic area, the other half being the separate Three Immortal Mountains park. Its visitor area covers 55,000 square metres on ground surrounded by sea on three sides, whose outline is likened to a treasure gourd lying on the water. It takes Daoist culture and Penglai myth as its background and the Eight Immortals story as its theme, combining classical-style buildings with landscaped gardens. The Yantai entry records an Eight Immortals temple fair reflecting local custom on the sixteenth day of the first lunar month.
