About Heban Mountain

Zouping's culture and tourism bureau places the mountain about five kilometres south of Xidong Subdistrict, gives its extent as 7,200 mu, and puts forest cover at 97 per cent, the basis for a local epithet calling it the ecological pearl of central Shandong. Binzhou municipal government describes the same site as a mountain-type natural scenic area belonging to the Baiyun Shan group, and records that this group of hills has long been called a deputy peak to Mount Tai. The ground is broken and steeply pitched and cut by long winding gullies, with rock, waterfall, spring and cloud effects among the things the municipal listing singles out. The two governments give different figures for the park's area and its forest cover, and the figures used here are the county bureau's.

Walking on the mountain is organised into five routes, which Zouping names Jiupujian, the waterfall gully; Shuiliandong, the water-curtain cave; Jiutanxi, a stream route the bureau likens to nine pearls strung on a single thread; Hexiangling, likened to a crane spreading its wings; and Hemingu. Binzhou puts their combined length at more than 6,000 metres. The mountain's name is explained by a local legend about a physician called Shi Sheng, who refused repeated summonses to serve as an imperial doctor and, when soldiers were sent to compel him, was carried off by a crane he had healed years earlier; people named the hill after the crane. A Taoist hall called Changshengyuan stands in the scenic area and is described as combining religious use with health and longevity practice.
