About Museum of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy
The collection includes the destroyer Anshan and the submarine Changzheng 1, giving a sense of scale that models alone cannot provide. Land exhibits add aircraft and naval equipment, while the galleries place them in the development of the navy. Plan the visit around the sections included in your reservation, since boarding individual vessels can follow different arrangements from entering the main museum.
The museum sits in Qingdao's Badaguan area, near Lu Xun Park (鲁迅公园) and Xiao Qingdao Park, facing the Qingdao Pier (栈桥) across the water. Established by the Navy in 1988 and formally opened on 1 October 1989, it is China's first specialized military museum documenting the development of the People's Liberation Army Navy, and it is managed by the navy's North Sea Fleet. The National Cultural Heritage Administration rated it among the first group of first-tier national museums in 2008, but downgraded it to a second-tier national museum in May 2013.
Shandong province and Qingdao city have designated the museum a patriotic-education and national-defense-education base, and in 2001 the Communist Party's Publicity Department (中宣部) named it a National Patriotic Education Demonstration Base; it is rated a national AAA-level tourist attraction (国家AAA级旅游景区).
Two vessels once shown at the museum have since been scrapped: the tank landing ship 'Dabie Shan' (大别山舰, hull number 926), a Type 1511 vessel retired in 1999 and the navy's first large landing ship, was towed away and dismantled around 2005-2007; the frigate 'Nanchong' (南充舰, hull number 502), a Type 65 vessel retired in 1995 and the navy's first domestically designed and built frigate, was towed to a scrapyard and dismantled in September 2012.
