About Tianheng Island
Tianheng Island (田横岛) lies off the south of Tianheng town (田横镇) in Qingdao's Jimo District (即墨区), a Yellow Sea islet inside Hengmen Bay (横门湾) and the Tianheng Island provincial tourist resort.
The island covers 1.46 km² and has about 8 km of coastline. The resort around it, approved by the Shandong provincial government in May 1998, takes in a mainland peninsula, sea and islands; its hills, among them Donggao Mountain (东高山) and Wohu Mountain (卧虎山), belong to the Laoshan (崂山) range, and it faces the Laoshan scenic area across the water.
The island is named after Tian Heng (田横), who ruled as king of Qi while the Qin dynasty was collapsing. After being defeated by Han Xin (韩信), a general of the future Han founder Liu Bang (刘邦), he fled to the island with five hundred followers; the Qingdao government's account says that after he died they chose death over surrender and killed themselves there. Sima Qian (司马迁) praised Tian Heng's integrity in the Records of the Grand Historian (史记), and the painter Xu Beihong (徐悲鸿) made the island widely known with his large oil painting "Tian Heng and His Five Hundred Followers" (田横五百士).
Qingdao listed the followers' tomb as a municipal protected site in 1982, and it is now a Shandong provincial protected site. Development began in 1992, a resort village opened in 1997, and the National Tourism Administration rated the island a national AAA scenic area in September 2001. Besides the tomb and a statue of Tian Heng, the island's sights include named natural features such as Divine Turtle Rock and Old Immortal Cave, and a Sea God Temple.
