About Yanshen Ancient Town
Boshan's identity rests on ceramics and glass. The district government describes it as the only place in China to hold the title of city of Chinese ceramics and glass, as a home of Chinese liuli glass, and as the only city in the country carrying both the ceramic and the glass tradition; elsewhere it is called one of the birthplaces of Chinese liuli culture and the porcelain capital of northern China, with kilns running back a thousand years. Yanshen Ancient Town is the conserved core of that industry.
The district worked on the old kiln village district by what it calls embroidering and darning, a piecemeal method of repair intended to keep the existing fabric rather than replace it, and turned the quarter into a cultural and tourism town combining heritage conservation, leisure and industry. The work took about two years, and the town had already hosted the 2021 Boshan Ceramics Biennale before its formal opening in September 2022, with an artists' community in residence, live glassblowing, ceramics exhibitions, talks on the culture of the old kilns and a display of the district's intangible heritage crafts. Ceramic and glass masters who took premises in the town signed agreements with the developer at the opening. In September 2023 an exhibition of Boshan ceramic and glass work was launched in the town, and those at the launch went on to tour the exhibition and try pottery-making.
