About Yuanshan National Forest Park

Yuanshan National Forest Park (原山国家森林公园) is a forested upland on the south-western side of the urban area of Boshan District (博山区), Zibo (淄博), Shandong, crossed by remains of the Qi Great Wall (齐长城).

China's Ministry of Forestry approved the park in 1992 over a planned 1,702 ha. The Boshan District government counts more than 120 peaks, grouped into areas including Fenghuang Mountain (凤凰山), named for its phoenix-like outline and also called Xiaoding Mountain (小顶山), Yuwang Mountain (禹王山), Wanglu Mountain (望鲁山) and Xuejiading (薛家顶). The Fenghuang Mountain area has more than 120 kinds of woody plants and over 600 herbaceous ones, and a "stone sea" (石海) of karst rock is among the park's sights. The park is a national AAAA tourist attraction.

Fenghuang Mountain was an important religious site and, in the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, a place of battle. Among the park's woods stand a Song-dynasty Jade Emperor Palace (玉皇宫), a Ming Red Gate (红门) and Mount Tai Travelling Palace (泰山行宫), and a Qing temple to Lü Dongbin (吕祖庙); rock paintings mark the cliffs, and gun towers and bunkers survive from the war against Japan. The Qing poet Zhao Zhixin (赵执信) wrote works such as "On Yuanshan" (原山考) and "The Wolf of Yuanshan" (原山狼).

The Qi state built its long wall in the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods against attack from Chu and Lu; across Shandong its remains stretch 618.9 km. Within Yuanshan the wall winds for almost 5 km, following the terrain and built mainly of local bluestone and clay. At about 420 m altitude the wall carries a beacon tower, Yanmen Pass (颜门关) and caves for hiding troops, and in the Fenghuang Mountain area more than 680 m were rebuilt in 1993. The Boshan government ties the legend of Meng Jiangnü (孟姜女), who wept at the wall, to this stretch, and the Zibo culture and tourism bureau notes that the tale was named national intangible heritage in 2006 with Zibo as its place of origin.
