About Chateau Changyu-Castel
China News Service records that Changyu brought the chateau model to China in 2002 with this estate, in a city with a long winemaking tradition. Its red wine grapes are Cabernet Gernischt, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Carignan and Yan-73, and its white grapes include Italian Riesling, Chardonnay, Muscat Hamburg, Pinot Blanc and Ugni Blanc. A 2023 feature carried by the Yantai commerce bureau places the estate on the low coastal plain between the mouths of the Huangjin and Liulin rivers, with the Yellow Sea to the north and the Bajiao Bay sand beach alongside, and notes that the estate had then stood for twenty-one years.
The main building at the far end of the vineyards is a European-style manor in white and pale grey with a blue tiled roof and green window frames. The plantings are divided between table-grape picking corridors and wine-grape plots, and a ten-mu research vineyard south of the main building holds more than 260 varieties collected from around the world, described locally as a museum of grape varieties. On the west side the Weimeisi tasting centre combines food and wine tasting, wine-culture presentation and meeting space, and its underground cellar holds more than 7,000 oak barrels from over a dozen brands. On the east side a 20,000-square-metre complex called the Window on the Wine City brings together a wine exhibition and sales centre and a personalised experience centre. In 2017 the Changyu wine culture tourism area led by this chateau was placed first in the national tourism administration's inaugural list of Chinese national industrial tourism demonstration bases.
