About Jing'an Sculpture Park

The works are distributed through a public park rather than arranged as a single indoor gallery sequence.

Named works documented for the park include Urban Fox and Red Beacon. Use the setting to compare sculpture at different scales and in changing light, while checking the current park map for locations. A museum visit and a sculpture walk offer complementary subjects without requiring both to be treated as one attraction.

Construction of the park's first phase, covering 30,000 square meters, began in October 2007 and was completed in 2008; a second phase was completed and opened in April 2010. That September, during the Shanghai World Expo, an international sculpture exhibition was held in the park. The new Shanghai Natural History Museum built within the park opened on 18 April 2015.

The park covers a total area of about 65,000 square meters and is bordered by Suzhou Creek to the north. Its design combines traditional Chinese garden techniques with modern landscaping, including an inner garden of nearly 10,000 square meters. In the plum garden (梅园), the 1,700-year-old Meihua Xishen Pu (梅花喜神谱), a plum-blossom painting manual, is carved onto the corridor walls. The new Natural History Museum building has a floor area of 45,257 square meters and an exterior shaped like a nautilus shell.
