About People's Park
A large pond and planted paths form a green space within the central shopping and museum district.
The former Race Club building now used by Shanghai History Museum and MOCA Shanghai give the park two different cultural connections. Begin with the landscape, then choose one museum according to its current programme. The park’s social gatherings are everyday activities, so observe respectfully without treating participants as exhibits.
The park occupies the site of the former Shanghai Race Club, established by the British in 1862 as a leading horse-racing track in East Asia and a popular venue for gambling among both Chinese and foreign residents. The club's building, erected in 1933, became a landmark in downtown Shanghai. After the People's Republic of China was founded in 1949, the new government banned horse racing and gambling, and in 1952 the racecourse was divided to create People's Park on its northern half and People's Square on its southern half.
During the 1990s the Shanghai municipal government moved to a site just south of the park, and the area gained the Shanghai Museum, the Shanghai Grand Theatre and the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall. The park itself contains a pond with a cafe-bar and a funfair among its attractions, and it is overlooked by high-rise buildings including the Park Hotel Shanghai and Tomorrow Square.
An 'English corner' has met in the park since 1978, becoming the country's first such gathering and prompting many imitations elsewhere; it later featured in a Shanghai junior secondary school English textbook. Participants, including older English speakers alongside younger teachers and students, gathered on Sundays to practise English with each other and with visitors, though its popularity has since declined.
