About Hongqiao International Airport

Terminal 2 is beside Hongqiao railway station, while Terminal 1 lies across the airfield.

This distinction matters more than the airport’s overall distance from the city. A flight-to-train connection through Terminal 2 and a journey involving Terminal 1 require different routes. Named metro stations serve each terminal, and the Airport Link Line connects the western hub with Pudong. Confirm the terminal on the airline booking before selecting the station or arranging a pickup.

Hongqiao was first planned in 1921 for a proposed Beijing-Shanghai air route, but funding shortfalls left only a dirt runway that never entered service; the airport finally opened for traffic in July 1929 and was expanded in April 1934, serving as a hub for the Eurasia Aviation Corporation (欧亚航空公司) from 1931 to 1934. Occupied as a Japanese military airfield after Japan's occupation of Shanghai in 1937, it later passed through Nationalist and Communist military control before a 1963-64 reconstruction restored it to international civil use.

Terminal 1, the original terminal, was first built in Changning District in 1984 and was enlarged in 1988 and 1994; most airlines now operate from Terminal 2 in Minhang. A renovation of Terminal 1 beginning in 2014 revised its facade and interior, added double boarding bridges for wide-body aircraft, and built a rooftop ground-transport center topped with a park, raising its floor area to 203,700 square meters by October 2018.

Hongqiao serves mainly domestic mainland routes together with flights to Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Japan and South Korea. It is a corporate headquarters and hub for China Eastern Airlines, Shanghai Airlines and Juneyao Air, and a hub for Spring Airlines. It was Shanghai's primary airport until Pudong International Airport opened on October 1, 1999.

At the airport

  • Terminal 2 adjoins the Hongqiao railway-station hub.
  • Terminal 1 has a separate location and metro station across the airfield.

Location & getting there

Getting to Hongqiao International Airport

Use Hongqiao Airport Terminal 1 or Terminal 2 station according to the flight booking. For an onward train, distinguish the airport terminal from Hongqiao Railway Station.

General visit reminders

Use the Chinese name and exact local address when arranging your arrival. A city, district or neighbourhood can cover a wide area, so choose the particular streets or venues you want to visit and group nearby stops together. Check onward and return connections before committing to a distant extension.

Plan your connection

A practical arrival-and-transfer sequence for this transport hub.

  1. Booked airport terminal

Begin with the correct terminal rather than the airport name alone.

  2. Terminal metro station or Hongqiao railway station

Follow the connection appropriate to the booked onward journey.

This order is editorial. Confirm access and any transfers between stops; it does not establish a walking route, same-day connection or common admission ticket.
