About Datong Museum
Datong Museum introduces the successive identities of a northern Chinese city: the ancient Dai region, Northern Wei Pingcheng, Liao and Jin Xijing, and the fortified city of the Ming and Qing periods. Its chronological galleries connect archaeological objects with the changing role of Datong in regional politics and cultural exchange.
The Northern Wei section is especially useful for understanding the city as Pingcheng, an imperial capital before the court moved to Luoyang. Later galleries show how the same place developed under different states and communities. This sequence gives context to monuments elsewhere in Datong without requiring visitors to treat every period as part of a single dynasty.
Follow the main historical sequence first, comparing how a dated object relates to the city map or period described beside it. Then return to the era that interests you most. The museum system also includes separate heritage venues and branches, so an exhibition mentioned under the Datong Museum name may belong to another address.
What to look for
- Follow the transition from Dai to Northern Wei Pingcheng.
- Compare the Liao–Jin and Ming–Qing city histories.
