About Mount Guashan
The mountain's name refers to the resemblance of its peaks to the patterns of the traditional trigrams. The temple landscape includes Tianning Temple, a Stone Buddha Hall, an academy, Wenchang Palace and associated shrines, together with towers and a pagoda cemetery. The local tourism bureau dates Tianning Temple's foundation to the first year of the Tang Zhenguan era, 627.
Ancient cypresses are as characteristic of Guashan as its halls. Some root into exposed rock and cliff faces, and individual trees have names such as Dragon-Claw Cypress, Ox-Head Cypress and Joined-Branch Cypress. Their contorted forms give the wooded slopes a distinct identity beyond the temple architecture.
