About Guoyu Ancient City
The village walls were built in 1635 as a refuge against disorder and attack. Rows of chambers within the walls combined shelter with defence, giving the enclosure its honeycomb character. At the centre, the seven-storey Yulou tower, built in 1640, added a stronghold with storage and provisions for people taking refuge.
Guoyu also preserves the scale and detail of a prosperous settlement. Tangdi Temple, founded in the Yuan period and repaired in later dynasties, stands inside the western gate. Its halls and raised theatre sit alongside Ming and Qing family compounds, whose gateways, heavy timber frames and carved wood, brick and stone reveal the standing of their former owners.
