About Hukou Waterfall on the Shanxi Side
Hukou lies in the gorge between Shanxi and Shaanxi, with hills on both sides. Here the river is squeezed into a much narrower rocky channel. Its yellow water, concentrated flow and roar give the waterfall its distinctive character; the name Hukou evokes the mouth of a kettle.
Jixian in Shanxi and Yichuan in Shaanxi face the same waterfall from opposite banks. The Shanxi setting belongs to Jixian, within Linfen, while the western bank belongs to Yichuan in Yan'an. The dramatic feature shared by both is the transition from the broad river to the constricted rock cleft.
What to look for
- The main fall where the Yellow River contracts into the rock gorge.
- The narrow channel and the hills framing both sides of the river.
