About Longmen Temple in Pingshun
Longmen Temple in Yuantou Village, Pingshun County, brings together buildings from several Chinese dynasties in one courtyard complex. Its early west side hall and later main hall give visitors a direct architectural comparison. This is the Pingshun temple in the Zhuozhang valley, separate from the Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang.
The west hall survives from the Five Dynasties period, the main Buddha hall from the Song, and the entrance hall from the Jin. Yuan, Ming and Qing structures add further layers. The result is a temple assembled through many generations of use and rebuilding, with differences in roof form, timber proportions and decoration.
Treat the courtyard as a place for comparison. First establish which building belongs to which period using the site labels, then return to the eaves, bracket sets and overall proportions. The oldest structure is not necessarily the most visually elaborate; the value of this visit comes from learning to recognise the differences.
What to look for
- Compare the early west hall with the Song main hall.
- Trace the different building periods around the courtyard.
- Look at structural proportions before decorative detail.
