About Longxing Temple in Xinjiang County
Longxing Temple occupies elevated ground at the northern end of Longxing Road in Xinjiang County, Yuncheng. Its sequence of steps, halls, inscriptions and pagoda makes the approach part of the experience. The county name is 新绛; this temple should not be confused with other Chinese temples called Longxing.
The central approach rises by a long stairway towards the religious buildings. Notable elements include the Biluo Stele, the Buddha hall and Longxing Pagoda. The temple grounds also contain brick tomb chambers transferred there for protection, so the material encountered on a visit does not all belong to one original religious complex or construction period.
Begin by following the axis from the steps towards the pagoda, then return to the smaller inscribed and carved features. The stele rewards close reading of its interpretation, while the pagoda is better understood from enough distance to see its overall profile. Labels explaining relocated material are essential for distinguishing a monument’s original context from its present display setting.
