About Pujiu Temple
Yingying Pagoda, named after the story's heroine, supplies the most distinctive architectural focus. Much of the temple complex was reconstructed from the late twentieth century, so the visit brings together an older pagoda, a rebuilt religious setting and literary interpretation. The story is useful context, provided its characters are understood as literature rather than documented residents.
Pujiu Temple's earliest textual record dates from the Sui dynasty, though the exact date of its construction is not documented. The pagoda now known as Yingying Pagoda was originally called Sarira Pagoda (舍利塔); it was renamed for the heroine of The Romance of the Western Chamber after the story brought the temple its fame.
The present Yingying Pagoda (莺莺塔) dates from 1564, during the Ming dynasty. It rises 39.5 metres through thirteen storeys and has a distinctive echo traditionally compared to a toad's call.
