About Xinzhou Ancient City
Formerly associated with the name Xiurong, the city served as a political, cultural and trading center in northern Shanxi. A major protection and redevelopment project began in 2017, including work at Xiurong Academy, Taishan Temple and Guandi Temple. The visitor district reflects this modern revival as well as the older settlement.
One feature of the redevelopment is a group of courtyards presenting the different counties of the Xinzhou area, including Wutai, Hequ and Fanshi. Food and craft shops are part of the experience: the Ministry of Culture and Tourism's account records naozifen starch jelly, buckwheat hele noodles, paper-cutting and traditional dyeing. These help explain why the quarter functions as a regional cultural showcase as well as an old-town visit.
