About Luoji Ninety-Nine Li Hot Spring Waterfalls

The Puge county gazetteer office describes magnesium bicarbonate spring water issuing from a cliff at 1,800 m at more than 100 litres per second, at 32 degrees Celsius, with mineralisation of 0.92 grams per litre and a pH of 7.9, and forming a natural hot-spring waterfall with a drop of more than 20 m and a width of 15 m. With the gorge of the Dacao river this makes up the scenic area the gazetteer calls the core of Luojishan. The spring was designated a Famous Spring of Sichuan in 1994, and in 2002 the State Council approved the Luojishan scenic and historic area for the fourth batch of national scenic and historic areas. The name comes from the gazetteer's own formula for the place: a scene every li and a marvel every nine li, ninety-nine scenes in all.

The falls are not one drop but many. The gazetteer counts more than a hundred hot-spring waterfalls of varying size making up a group more than 200 m across, the highest single fall being 50 m, and records that in 2013 the World Record Association recognised the spring as the world's largest hot-spring waterfall. The waterfall is one of five features the same page lists for Luojishan as a whole, alongside horn peaks and arete ridges, glacial lakes, ancient glacial striation grooves and rhododendron; Luojishan is registered both as a national key scenic and historic area and as a national AAAA-grade tourist area.

What to look for

  • The natural hot-spring waterfall itself, more than 20 m from top to bottom and 15 m wide, issuing from the cliff face at 1,800 m.
  • The wider waterfall group, more than 200 m across, made up of over a hundred separate falls of different sizes, the tallest of them 50 m.
  • The gorge of the Dacao river, which the gazetteer treats as part of the same scenic area rather than as a separate place.
  • Luojishan, of which the gazetteer calls this the core scenic area, and whose glacial lakes and ancient glacial striation grooves it names among the mountain's five distinctive features.
