About Wuxuhai Lake

The county bureau's entry gives the scenic area 400 square kilometres and an altitude of 3,760 metres, and the lake itself about 1,200 metres in length, 600 metres in width and 33 metres at its deepest, fed by snowmelt and groundwater. The bureau says the area still keeps its original, plain natural scenery, and lists the scenic area as including Wuxuhai itself, Riluku, the Twelve Sisters Peaks, the Wuxu Tibetan village, Foyefeng, Zhenhaishi, waterfalls and Caoyuanzi.

The prefecture's 2015 introduction to the sights around Gongga Shan places that mountain within Luding, Kangding and Jiulong counties and describes the area centred on it, 10,000 square kilometres in all, as including the Hailuogou, Mugecuo, Wuxuhai and Gongga south slope areas; it writes the lake's name with a different first character from the one the county bureau uses. The prefecture's register of A-grade tourist areas, current to 11 April 2022, separately lists the Wuxuhai-Riluku Tourist Area in Jiulong County at grade 3A, giving its address as Wuxu village in Tanggu township.

What to look for

• The lake itself, about 1,200 metres long and 600 metres wide, reaching 33 metres at its deepest, with snowmelt and groundwater feeding it.
• The Twelve Sisters Peaks, named by the county bureau among the features that make up the scenic area.
• Zhenhaishi and Foyefeng, two further named features on the same list.
• The Wuxu Tibetan village, which the bureau's list places within the scenic area, and which the prefectural register gives as the address of the Wuxuhai-Riluku Tourist Area.
• Riluku, the second named place in the tourist area's own registered title.
