About Anping Tree House and Tait & Co. Merchant House
Anping Tree House occupies former warehouse space behind the Tait & Co. merchant house in Tainan's old port district. The overgrown building and the white trading-house frontage are neighbouring parts of a commercial landscape, with very different present appearances.
Tait & Co. established an Anping base after the port opened to foreign trade. The business exported sugar, camphor and tea and imported opium, placing the site within the unequal and sometimes harmful trading networks of the nineteenth century. The warehouse later served the Japanese salt industry, and extensions contributed to the form now seen at the tree house.
The tree house makes the meeting of vegetation and masonry especially visible, while the merchant-house building gives the commercial history a more formal architectural face. Read both together: roots and walls tell a story of abandonment and reuse, but they do not explain the port economy on their own. Interpretation of the trading company and subsequent salt business helps connect the two spaces without treating them as one unchanged colonial building.
