About Baxian Caves Archaeological Site
Baxian Caves (八仙洞) are a group of former sea caves on the coastal cliffs of Changbin Township. Waves cut cavities into the rock when the shoreline stood at different levels; uplift then left caves above today's sea. The changing heights of the openings make this a visible record of the east coast's geological development.
The caves also contain the archaeological site associated with the Palaeolithic Changbin culture. This human history is separate from the later religious names given to individual cavities. Understanding both layers prevents the Eight Immortals name from obscuring why the site is significant in Taiwan's archaeology.
The visitor centre provides a useful introduction before any authorised cave path. From higher accessible points, the surrounding marine terraces place the openings within the larger coast. Follow the current heritage-site boundaries and path notices: the attraction is an archaeological landscape to observe, and not every cave or former religious space should be assumed open for unrestricted entry.
