About Dapeng Bay Lagoon

Dapeng Bay is a coastal lagoon near Donggang in Pingtung County. Sediment carried from the surrounding rivers, then redistributed by currents and seasonal winds, formed the sandspit that almost encloses the water. The remaining sea opening lies beneath the Dapeng Bay bridge.

That narrow connection explains why the bay is described as a single-mouth lagoon. Water exchange, sediment movement and the need to maintain a navigable opening are central to understanding the landscape. The surrounding wetlands and shore routes offer different ways to observe this meeting of managed water, vegetation and coastal settlement.

The bay also has a human history that includes oyster cultivation and a Japanese-era naval aviation base. Today's recreation areas occupy a landscape with these earlier uses, rather than an untouched natural lake. Begin with the visitor centre or a shoreline viewpoint to understand the wider geography, then choose any cycling, wetland or boat activity as a separate route.
