About Hengchun Old Town and City Gates
Hengchun's historic town centre retains four city gates from a late Qing walled settlement. Construction began in 1875 and took several years, placing the town within the administrative expansion of Taiwan's southern peninsula. The gates remain useful landmarks for understanding the older urban layout.
The surviving fabric has changed through storms, earthquakes, war and later rebuilding. South Gate retains an arched passage and surrounding brickwork but has undergone substantial alteration; North Gate has a different appearance after the loss of its earlier gatehouse. Comparing the gates is therefore more revealing than assuming that all four preserve the same design or degree of originality.
The old streets and surviving wall sections now sit within a working town. A walk between the gates connects monumental architecture with shops, houses and everyday traffic, showing how the historic enclosure has been absorbed into modern Hengchun. Use the gate names to orient the route, and read the heritage interpretation for the distinction between surviving, restored and reconstructed parts. The town itself is the setting; individual monuments are separate stops along the way.
