About Lalashan National Forest Recreation Area
Lalashan's national forest recreation area protects a mountain forest around Upper Baling in Taoyuan's Fuxing District. Large cypress trees are the best-known feature, but they belong to a mixed forest ecosystem shaped by moisture, elevation and a long history of growth.
Follow the signed visitor routes to compare individual trunks, roots and the layers of vegetation around them. Mist may change the view within a short walk. Looking at the forest floor and canopy gives a fuller impression than treating each numbered giant tree as a separate photographic target.
The surrounding landscape is also connected with Atayal communities. The forest recreation area has a defined visitor boundary; its admission does not automatically authorise entry to neighbouring reserves or longer mountain routes. Separate trail closures can apply even when the main recreation area is operating.
What to look for
- Large cypress trees within a mixed mountain forest.
- Signed routes showing different parts of the giant-tree area.
- Moist forest conditions and changing canopy views.

Getting to Lalashan National Forest Recreation Area
Check the forestry authority's road and trail notices before departing for Upper Baling. Choose an open route within your walking ability, carry rain protection, and avoid stepping onto exposed tree roots beyond the path.
