About Mingchi Forest Recreation Area
Mingchi (明池) is a small mountain lake and forest recreation landscape in Datong Township, close to the Yilan–Taoyuan boundary on the Northern Cross-Island Highway. Its identity comes from still water enclosed by forest, a cool upland setting and planted gardens arranged around the shore. This is a forest-and-lake stop rather than a boat-tour destination.
The landscaped grounds include moss and fern gardens, a nursery and paths through the surrounding trees. Garden buildings and lakeside shelters frame reflections across the water, while the slope paths place the lake within its wider forest setting. The botanical planting is part of the visitor experience, alongside the water itself.
The Tourism Administration notice checked on 10 September 2026 states that the recreation area has been temporarily closed for maintenance since 1 March 2026. The introduction describes the site and does not establish visitor access. Wait for an explicit reopening announcement before planning to enter the gardens or book a visit.
