About Shen Ji New Village
Shen Ji New Village is a compact group of former government staff residences in Taichung's West District. The housing originally served employees of the provincial audit administration, which explains the name: this was a residential compound, not a historic village that gradually grew around a temple or market.
The older buildings have been adapted for a creative and commercial role. Small premises and the spaces between them create a close-grained setting for browsing, with the scale of the original housing still visible beneath later shopfronts and displays. The appeal lies partly in this contrast between an ordinary institutional housing estate and the ways it has been reused.
Read the place through its building arrangement as well as its businesses. Short passages, doorways and shared outdoor areas make movement and neighbourly proximity part of the experience. Individual tenants and events can change, so an older photograph of a stall or installation does not identify a permanent feature. The site works well as one stop in a broader West District walk, rather than as a substitute for the nearby museum's collections or exhibitions.
