National Taichung Theater stands in Xitun District as both a performing-arts venue and a distinctive work of contemporary architecture. Designed by Toyo Ito, it is organised around curved surfaces and interconnected, cave-like spaces rather than a conventional sequence of rectangular rooms and corridors.

The theatre's own architectural explanation describes 58 curved walls and 29 cave forms. These create spaces that feel separated yet connected, allowing light, air, movement and sound to become part of the building's spatial idea. Its bottle-like exterior profiles are another expression of this approach. Walking through the accessible public areas reveals the structure more clearly than viewing the facade alone.

Inside are three professional theatres and a multipurpose salon, with an outdoor theatre, plaza and rooftop garden adding other settings. A building visit and a performance are distinct experiences: the public architectural route does not include automatic access to auditoriums, backstage areas or every terrace.
