About Xiangshan Hiking Trail

Xiangshan, or Elephant Mountain, rises beside Taipei’s Xinyi district. The hillside trail is known for views across the Taipei Basin and toward Taipei 101, but the sandstone landscape and vegetation also give it an identity beyond the skyline photograph.

Tawny rock faces, large boulders and wooded slopes shape the walking route. Interpretive signs explain the local environment, including ferns that thrive on the shaded slopes. The viewpoints are reached through a hillside walk rather than a street-level promenade.

The group called the Six Giant Rocks is a recognizable feature along the route. Views vary with cloud, rain and the direction of light, so a familiar postcard composition should be treated as a possibility rather than a guaranteed scene.

What to look for

  • Sandstone cliffs and boulders reveal the physical structure of the hill.
  • Viewpoints frame the Xinyi skyline and the wider Taipei Basin.
  • Ferns and other hillside plants add interest between the more crowded overlooks.
