About Huazhai Traditional Village, Zhongshe
Zhongshe's old houses (中社古厝) belong to Huazhai, a traditional settlement on Wang'an Island. The original Flower Village name refers to houses placed amid surrounding hills likened to petals. Its later Zhongshe name reflects its central position among Wang'an's villages, linking the settlement's identity to both landscape and local geography.
The old-house groups preserve a distinctive island residential environment, with lanes, courtyards and detailed window treatments. The Zeng family house is particularly known for book-scroll-shaped windows and brick latticework forming the family character. These details reveal how an individual family's identity could be expressed within a shared building tradition.
Migration away from the island left some houses deteriorating, prompting community preservation efforts. A walk is therefore also an encounter with different states of repair and continuing local life. View the buildings from public lanes, distinguish a visitor-accessible house from a private home, and give the settlement's architecture attention beyond its usefulness as a photographic backdrop.
