About Tholing Monastery
Founded in 996 under Yeshe O, it became a base for translators and teachers including Rinchen Zangpo and Atisha. Its buildings reward attention to their different forms: the Gyatsa hall follows a mandala-inspired plan, while the White Hall is known for its murals. Stupas along the river-facing side place the monastery within the wider earth-forest landscape rather than isolating it as a single hall.
The complex extends mainly from east to west, with buildings arranged on either side of a central axis. Gyatsa Hall (迦萨殿) contains inner and outer groups of chapels, including a square central hall measuring 14 metres on each side. The space between the main halls and a large stupa serves as a square for scripture debates, teaching, ritual dances and Tibetan opera.
The Assembly Hall (集会殿) preserves murals depicting figures including Yeshe-O (益西沃) and the translator Rinchen Zangpo (仁钦桑布), alongside inscriptions about the monastery's history. During the Fifth Dalai Lama's period, paintings from Gyatsa Hall were copied for the central corridor of Dazhao Temple (大昭寺). The White Hall (白殿) has forty-two columns, while the nearby Yellow Hall (黄殿) was a principal place for Rinchen Zangpo's translation and religious practice.
What to look for
