About Zanda Earth Forest Viewing Route
The item on the Ngari Prefecture Administrative Office site, credited to Tibet Daily, sets out how the landform formed. It says the lake-basin sediments there were affected by the Himalayan orogeny, that the water level fell and the basin rose, and that long weathering and erosion and cutting by river water formed the unusual earth-forest landform. The China Tibet News description of the national geological park gives the park's bounds instead: it adjoins Purang County on the east, reaches Kashmir on the west, is separated from India on the south by the Himalaya and adjoins Gar County on the north across the Ayila mountain, and it spreads along both banks of the Xiangquan river with Toling town as its centre.
The county's rivers are what the descriptions tie the landform to. The China Tibet News account counts fourteen rivers of varying size in the county and describes the Xiangquan river, called Langqin Zangbu in Tibetan, as the largest river flowing through the Zanda basin; it rises in modern Himalayan glaciers near Lanta in the east of the county, is named for a spring mouth the account describes as shaped like an elephant drawing water, and after passing Qusongduo, Toling town and Luba it crosses the Himalaya west of the Shipuqi pass into India, where it is renamed the Sutlej. The same account says the river gave rise to Zanda's Zhangzhung culture, its Guge civilisation and its earth-forest landscape. Its account of the landform's forms is open-ended: it lists bottle-shaped, roof-shaped, residual, peak-cluster-and-castle, two-coloured stepped, nose-shaped, bell-shaped, Gothic, spire-shaped and tower-shaped earth-forest forms among many others.
A 2024 Tibet Daily report carried on the regional government's site describes one part of the forest: the Xianyi Gully earth-forest scenic area in Zanda County, where it says earth columns rise steeply and unevenly like drawn swords. It places the seat of Xiangzi township eight kilometres from the scenic area and calls Xiangzi a well-known tourism township of Ngari. The report records, among the infrastructure essentially completed when it was written, a visitor management centre, a feature gateway, a homestay service point, a gravel road for sightseeing vehicles, a viewing platform and safety works, and it quotes a visitor saying that the area's facilities, among them its wooden walkways, its sightseeing vehicle and its eco-friendly tourist toilets, make high-altitude travel safer and more comfortable. Those are the facilities in place when the report was written, not a statement of the area's present condition.
The catalogue calls this entry 札达土林正规观景路线, a formal viewing route. No cited source designates a route across the earth forest, describes its stages or waypoints, or states any access rule. What the sources establish is the landform, its extent and its designation, the river valley it occupies, the forms it takes, and the facilities the 2024 report records at the Xianyi Gully scenic area in Xiangzi township.
