About Mount Everest Base Camp Visitor Area
The Qomolangma (Everest) National Nature Reserve is divided into core, buffer and experimental zones, with visitor access limited to the buffer and experimental zones. Rongbuk Monastery sits at the terminus of provincial road S515, and the road there, and within 100 m either side of it, falls within the experimental zone, from which Everest is visible at a distance. In December 2018 the Qomolangma Administration Bureau of Tingri County, citing the national 'Green Shield' environmental action and China's Nature Reserve Regulations, issued a directive barring entry to the reserve's core zone above Rongbuk Monastery, so that visitors touring the area stopped at the monastery rather than continuing about 2 km further to the former Everest Base Camp tent site.
